55 ‘ANATOLIA’ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Thessaloniki, Greece The “Anatolia Elementary School” complex in Thessaloniki, Greece is a project encompassing classrooms, a library, an entrance tunnel, an auditorium, and a gym, totaling 3,600 m². Built in a seismic active area, the architectural concept aimed to resemble a child’s drawing. The structures are predominantly reinforced concrete, except for the auditorium roof, which is made of steel. The foundation soil consists of loose sandy clay with low strength. SCIA Engineer played a crucial role in modelling the complex’s folded plate structures, elastically supported to the ground. The 2D shell structure with vertical walls and inclined roof plates accurately represents the steeply sloping pitched roofs. Steel members were modeled in 1D. The project underwent linear static and response spectrum analyses to ensure structural integrity. Leveraging the advanced capabilities of SCIA Engineer, the team successfully met the complex’s strict architectural requirements. The software allowed them to achieve the intricate geometry of the buildings while ensuring they are designed to withstand the challenging seismic conditions of the area.
