SCIA User Contest 2023

72 The Passerelle sur l’Arve is a cable-stayed footbridge spanning 56 m in length, providing a passage for pedestrians and cyclists over the Arve River, which flows from Chamonix to Geneva. The bridge features a mast that stands 18 m tall and is inclined at a 20° angle towards the river. The project entailed resolving several intricate engineering challenges. To address these complexities, a “third order” nonlinear analysis was conducted, considering large deformations and initial imperfections. The elongation of the tension rods led to significant displacements of the mast, reaching 10 cm under service load. Considering the mast’s susceptibility to buckling and bending, it was crucial to account for substantial deformations, including initial imperfections in relation to buckling modes. Furthermore, an eigen frequencies analysis was performed to meet the French regulations for footbridges, ensuring a certain level of comfort for users. Given the project’s location in a mountainous area, a seismic analysis was also necessary, based on the determination of eigen frequencies. SCIA Engineer played a vital role in simultaneously considering all the aforementioned aspects, allowing for a holistic approach to bridge design. Additionally, the stiffness of the pile foundations was taken into account during the analysis. CABLE-STAYED FOOTBRIDGE Sallanches, France NOMINEE “A unique bridge with the use of several of the most advanced SCIA Engineer capabilities.”
