SCIA User Contest 2023

74 In Bissegem, the construction of the Seine-Schelde network involves the removal of one of the last obstacles on the Leie river. Tractebel has taken on the task of designing a new, wider, and elevated bridge to establish a sustainable connection between Paris and Flanders. The new bridge is a fixed arch road bridge, featuring a steel arch construction consisting of two sloping arches connected to the bridge deck via hangers. The bridge includes two lanes for road traffic, while separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians ensure their safety away from motorized vehicles. With a width of 20.5 m, the bridge accommodates all users. SCIA Engineer has played a crucial role in this project, facilitating the design of the quay, abutments, and the bridge itself. A detailed 3D model, encompassing all the necessary stiffeners, was created for each bridge component. These detailed models were then integrated into the overall bridge model, primarily consisting of beams and 2D elements for the deck. To handle the complex geometry, the Koala plug-in in Grasshopper was utilized to transfer accurate geometry from TEKLA to SCIA Engineer. The models were subjected to various checks, including steel stresses, weld fatigue, and stability of plate fields, with nonlinear calculations incorporating geometric imperfections imposed by corresponding buckling shapes. ARCH BRIDGE Bissegem-Marke, Belgium NOMINEE “The most complex details with curved geometry were imported using SCIA Engineer’s Koala plug-in for Grasshopper, and further detailing of stiffeners and openings were added using SCIA Engineer’s design tools.”
