76 The F203 bicycle bridge, part of the “Werken aan de Ring” project by de Werkvennootschap, connects Bertem and Sterrebeek. The architects chose a timber bridge to harmonize with the natural surroundings, protecting the timber with a concrete slab for durability. With a single span of 28.4 m, the bridge is supported on both ends. The concrete slab is 0.26 m high, while the glued glulam beams are 1.2 m high. The deck width is 6 m, with each glulam beam measuring 2.5 m in width. Challenges arose due to the lack of regulations for timberconcrete composite bridges, considering factors like stiffness of connections, time-dependent behavior, and internal stresses from temperature variation. SCIA Engineer facilitated the creation of a detailed 3D model, with the concrete slab modeled as a 2D plate and the timber beams as 1D elements. Glulam beams were simulated as weightless cross beams with appropriate transverse stiffness. The connection between timber beams and the concrete slab was represented using a hinge with the slip modulus. Accounting for variations in Young’s modulus and temperature effects allowed a comprehensive understanding of force distribution throughout the bridge’s life cycle. In cooperation with Sweco Belgium.
