84 The picturesque village of Steyl, situated on the Maas River, is undertaking flood protection measures to safeguard against future floods. A self-closing flood barrier is being installed at the botanical garden “Jochemhof” over a 147 m stretch. This barrier automatically activates during high water and requires no external intervention. It comprises a box structure with two gates and a selfclosing steel flap. Divided into 4 sections, the 133.8 m long and 4.6 m wide box closes the dike ring area during high water. It can withstand water levels up to NAP 21.4 m, 3.7 m above ground level behind the barrier. To ensure geotechnical stability, Plaxis 2D was used for calculations, which aided in designing the flood barrier’s concrete structure in SCIA Engineer. The successful integration of four models into a single calculation model involved close collaboration between Maters and De Koning, Fugro, and Dura Vermeer. Both soft and stiff models considered inward and outward loads. The SCIA Garage’s load combination spreadsheet facilitated obtaining results for all models simultaneously to identify critical forces. Additionally, complex 2D elements from Revit were seamlessly imported into SCIA Engineer using IFC import.
