85 BOWSTRING BRIDGE Lochem, Netherlands The ‘Achterhoekse Schakel’ bridge spans the Twentecanal as part of the ‘N346 Schakel Achterhoek - A1’ project. It’s a bowstring bridge for two lanes, measuring 137.7 m in length, with a 15.8 m wide concrete deck and a 24 m high arch. Constructed with 1,300 tons of steel, the deck consists of a 25 cm thick reinforced concrete plate supported by steel crossbeams every 4.8 m. The crossbeams connect to main beams with closed boxed steel sections, which, in turn, link to the arches through hangers every 9.6 m. The arches feature diamond-shaped, closed boxed steel sections with varying height. SCIA Engineer was used to dimension the bridge for traffic and aid in erection engineering. Modelling the concrete plate with 2D elements accounted for orthotropic behavior and different stiffness based on loading direction. Stiffness was modified for short-term and long-term loading, considering creep effects. The ‘rib’ functionality simulated cooperation between steel crossbeams and the concrete upper flange. Graphical sections were employed to model the intricate steel sections of the main beams and arches. A second-order analysis generated stability forms and utilized them as initial imperfections for analysis.
