87 TRANSFO BRIDGE Zwevegem, Belgium The bridge spans 26.4 m and is supported by a new concrete wall in the existing building and a console on the existing quay wall. It consists of two 2.54 m-high corten steel girders welded from plates up to 20 mm thick, serving as the side walls. Preventing buckling of the girders’ top flange was a key challenge. U-shaped transverse elements were strategically placed every 2 m, providing support to the bridge deck and a 10 mm steel plate deck reinforced with webs every 40 cm. The deck also acts as a horizontal wind brace. The connection between the bridge deck and U-shaped elements was carefully designed, creating an attractive underside with a deliberate gap between the girders and the deck. Stiffeners on the inner side of the girder’s web prevent shear buckling. The bridge slides on the existing concrete quay wall for support. In SCIA Engineer, a beam model representing the bridge was used for ultimate limit state calculations, with the wall girders modeled as trusses. Buckling shapes were determined, and a nonlinear calculation with an imposed imperfection was performed. A plate model was employed to evaluate the bridge’s dynamic behavior, calculating eigenmodes and eigenfrequencies.
