89 STEEL FOOTBRIDGE ‘PARKBRUG’ Antwerp, Belgium The Fietshelling Parkbrug is a steel footbridge located in Antwerp’s “Het Eilandje” district. Spanning 138.7 m with a maximum slope of 4%, it is designed specifically for cyclists. The bridge is constructed on the roof slab of an existing underground parking structure not originally designed to bear additional loads. Therefore, the bridge relies on the existing parking columns for support. The alignment of the bridge deck ensures a minimum clear distance of 8 m from nearby buildings and provides comfortable conditions for cyclists with gentle turns and limited slope. V-shaped columns transfer the loads of the bridge deck to the underlying columns, minimizing the additional loads. The optimization of the new structure’s self-weight was achieved by utilizing plates ranging from 10 mm to 30 mm thickness. In the curved sections, the width varies between 3.48 m and 4.58 m, utilizing plates of different thicknesses. The cross-section editor in SCIA Engineer proved valuable in enhancing the efficiency of the design process. The calculated displacements of the bridge closely matched the measured displacements on-site during a test loading, demonstrating the accuracy of the calculations.
