Purpose of the new power plant is to meet the expected power shortages, especially with the forthcoming Olympic Games. The 390 MW power plant a combined cycle gas turbine. The plant is located just outside the circular road, in the northeast of Thessalonica. The gas turbine supplies 260 MW. The HRSG converts the heat of the exhaust gasses (600°C) to steam to power a steam turbine for an additional 140 MW. The HRSG is designed and constructed by CMI (Liège Belgium). Technum designed the steel structure (600 ton) and chimney (top 60 m) for the 2000 ton HRSG. Thessalonica is in area susceptible to earthquake (risk zone II). A spectral-response analysis was performed to check the structure and its contents to earthquake.
